I don’t know about you but I’ve had those times when money and time were short when it came time for summer vacation. I either didn’t have a lot of time off from work, or very little money, or both.
Our family when it was younger took a lot of what we would call “StayCations”. First of all it was hard to coordinate my vacation time with my husband’s. We both had high stress jobs, and neither employer was very big on being generous with “Our Time Off!” We earned it, but it was hard getting the time off. One summer I even bargained with my boss to work every weekend for 6 weeks if I could have the same weekdays off as my husband so we could go take our kids and spend time with them and have fun!
So, what do you do on a “StayCation?”
This is a list of things we can do in Pueblo, Colorado. You can certainly adapt this list to where you live.
• Start with a leisurely breakfast, take it out to the patio. You know, pancakes, bacon, eggs. Stuff you don’t have time for when you’re working.
• Spend the day at the local pool.
• Take a tour of one of the local museums.
• Pack a lunch and go to the local zoo. Have lunch in the park.
• Spend a day in the mountains near you, or the beach if you have one. We have mountains. Take charcoals and grill hamburgers, hot dogs, chips, sodas, bottled water. Make tin foil meals and let them cook on the charcoals for dinner. Take chairs, lounge chairs, yard games, such as yard darts, corn hole. Spend the whole day there.
• Go out to eat at a nice restaurant (One you’ve never been to).
• Go to a Day Spa, have a massage, a facial, manicure and pedicure.
• Take the kids ice skating.
• Go to the Riverwalk
• Go to the City Park in the evening for the rides.
I’m sure you get the idea.
Rediscover where you live. Being born and raised in Pueblo most of my life makes me take it for granted sometimes. We do have several things to do for families and visitors. I just have to really think about those things, however.
Creativity and imagination can help you have a luxury vacation at home. Sleep in, indulge in a wonderful breakfast that you wouldn’t normally have time for at home, then spend the rest of your day touring your city at home.
Then wrap it all up with a nice dinner at a local restaurant, and end with a stroll along the Riverwalk.
Enjoy your city. Let me know if you have taken some fabulous “StayCations”.
