Happy Memorial Day!!
What is Memorial Day exactly? Well, it is the day that we remember and honor our men and women who died serving their country in the military.
It truly only became an official holiday in 1971. I remember celebrating it though as a little girl, and when I was in school , I was just happy that it was another day we didn’t have to go to school. I liked school mind you, but Memorial Day was the signal that the school year was ending, and I could enjoy my lazy days of summer.
Memorial Day was originally known as Decoration Day and dates to the days of the Civil War. Many Americans celebrate Memorial Day by visiting cemeteries and put new flowers and flags on the grave sites, which is one thing that I do. My husband and I took over that job when our grandparents passed away and they were the ones that used to do that. Today is particularly sad, as I also will be putting flowers on my husband’s mausoleum. He passed away in November. He never served in the military, but he did serve as a law enforcement officer for several years.
Memorial Day is a day of family gatherings, bar-b-ques, out on the reservoir in the boat, hiking in the mountains, picnics in the parks, however you celebrate Memorial Day, please take a few minutes to give thanks who served and gave the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom that we enjoy today.
