I literally just finished my FB live last Tuesday night, the title was, “How Mexico’s Hotels Are Safely Welcoming Back Guests!” An hour and 1/2 later the CDC was announcing new travel restrictions. On January 12, 2021 that night the CDC came out with the restrictions of anyone entering the US internationally would have to show a negative Covid test. They also stated that all international airline passengers would have to show a negative Covid test or a “Documentation of Recovery” within the last 90 days, this included any US citizens re-entering the US after traveling abroad. The Documentation of Recovery is for people who have recovered within the last 90 days as you can still test positive up to 4-5 months after having Covid. These restrictions will go in effect starting Jan. 26, 2021.
Then 2 days later many resorts in Mexico and other locations such as Dominican Republic started sending out notices to Travel Advisors and their agencies that they were providing Covid testing on site at the resorts. They were going to make sure that their guests would be tested and have printed results in time to return home to the US. This is just another added service that certain resorts are willing to add so that their guests will be comfortable traveling there.
I had to search the CDC site to find out what a Document of Recovery was. It simply states that you need to have a copy of your positive Covid test and a letter from your health care provider that you have recovered within the last 90 days.
So that being said I feel much more comfortable traveling to Cancun later this year.
So here are a list of things Mexico Hotels are doing to welcome their guests back.
There is no mandatory requirement for quarantine at this date. However, if you are sick or experiencing symptoms of Covid 19 STAY HOME! Right now you don’t have to show a negative Covid 19 test to enter Mexico, but you have to have one to get on the plane. So you have to be tested 3 days before you board the plane, and then, 3 days before you return to the US.
You can find safe, sanitized and private vehicles at the Airport Concierge in Cancun. Reservations are a must. You can make those online. They are private vehicles with driver with mask and Covid free, and they will gladly take you to your hotel. A fee is charged. Or you may be able to make transportation arrangements with the hotel/resort you are staying at. Transportation may be included in your travel package if that’s what you’ve booked.
Many hotels have earned the SAFE TRAVELS by WTTC (World Travel and Tourism Council) Stamp. This means they follow certain stringent cleaning procedures such as:
- Low-touch solutions, mobile check-in, mobile key and express check-out
- Temperature checks for incoming guests
- Disinfecting luggage upon guests’ arrival
- Sanitizing mats for shoes
- Deep cleaning guest rooms between stays with electrostatic sprayers
- Removal of nonessential high-touch items
- Limited housekeeping frequency to reduce contact
- Furniture rearranged to promote social distancing
- Safe distance signage
- Disinfecting saunas, steam rooms & showers after each use
- FOOD AND BEVERAGE AREAS: Handwashing every 20 minutes by staff
- Grab and Go and pre-packaged items
- QR code menus and disposable menus
- Daily sanitizing of all areas from restaurants to kitchens
- Deeper more frequent disinfecting of areas after high volume guest use
So clearly all the resorts in Mexico are seeking to provide safe and very clean resorts and spas to their guests! This is their lively hood. They are Very Happy to be welcoming Guests Back!
I for one am happy to be able to travel again too. We just have to follow the rules to keep ourselves and others safe and healthly!

I feel your pain. I’m a travel agent and a big travel junkie. Our last trip was a cruise in 2019. I’m going crazy. Fingers crossed the end of 2021 will start to be easier to travel again.
